"Breathing Together II" makes manifest some of the poetic undercurrents that have tempered the residential phase of the first cohort of the TBA21–Academy Ocean Space fellowship. It is hinged on the shared experience of research as a gradual unfolding rooted in an elongated present, a form of floatation that sways between points of existing reference and departure and accommodates the dissection of embodied revelations.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 12 | OCEAN-ARCHIVE.ORG, 9:00-7:00pm

ELLA NAVOT

A big white ship is lying sunken in the sea, murky waters covering the letters spelling “The Peace Ship”. It was the vessel of the pirate radio “The voice of Peace”, broadcasting from somewhere in the Mediterranean as the jingle repeated. Thirty years after its last transmission, we will be taking over these waves from the venetian lagoon, drifting away from the story of the individual captain hero, and from a notion of peace to that of justice. On board, guests are invited for conversations around climate justice activism, radio as a subversive medium, the future (of water) and more…
Special focus will be given to the struggle against the east-med gas pipeline that would carry fossil gas from the disputed waters of the Levantine Basin (Cyprus, Israel and potentially Palestine) to Italy.

It will be possible to follow the radio broadcast live-streaming on Ocean-Archive.org.

Records of Changing Times

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 12 | OCEAN SPACE, 7:00-8:30pm

NADIA CHRISTIDI

Anthropogenic interventions and climate change are rapidly transforming environmental and socioeconomic conditions in the Venetian Lagoon from the livelihoods of fishermen to the habitats of crabs. Various Venice-based researchers, artists, and activists are working with local communities and experts to document and archive this complex, ongoing process and the divisive interpretations and explanations that surround it. Ocean Fellow Nadia Christidi will lead a discussion with guest panelists about the challenges of documenting an unfolding, transforming present; the work of constructing narratives from the bottom up which acknowledge multiple perspectives; and the politics of troubling prevalent knowledge hierarchies. Together we will explore some of the changes in the lagoon and tackle questions like: What is the significance of place-based knowledge and place-based studies and what insights can they give us into some of our global Capitolecene conditions? How can local knowledge inform technical environmental expertise? Can oral histories become material for ‘scientific’ research? Is it possible to record change while avoiding nostalgia? And what is the relationship between archiving and building better futures?

Panelists include videomaker Matteo Stocco, who will speak from his experiences with developing Metagoon - a web documentary project on the complex realities and narratives surrounding change in the lagoon; environmental scientist and founder of Ittico Sostenibile Federico Riccato, who will draw on his research into lagoon fish populations and his efforts to promote more sustainable fishing practices and Maria Mercedes Lopez, a marine biologist affiliated with the University of Padova who will tell us about her work combining data and the local knowledge of fishermen from Chioggia in studying fish and fishing in the lagoon and Adriatic Sea.

Participation is free but reservation is required at this link.
