A freq_wave (freak wave) is a rogue wave, or otherwise a monster wave, killer wave, extreme wave: an unpredictable surface wave that strikes with force and unsettles, at times, large ocean vessels.
Curated by Carl Michael von Hausswolff and co-curated by Alonso Vázquez, freq_wave (on ocean archive) is a sound commission corroborating the work of 84 exceptional artists. As an interactive web-based collaboration, freq_wave acoustically unfolded over three months responding to the seven trajectories outlined in “Territorial Agency: Oceans in Transformation.” The artists, divided into groups of twelve and allocated to specific trajectories, used and generated sounds in a designated frequency range, creating a bathymetric constellation.
